City Issues Generator Safety Warning

The city's Fire Marshal Office and the Office of Civil Preparedness is warning homeowners to use portable power generators carefully.
"Don't get me wrong. Generators are great, but they're great if they're used properly," said Paul Estefan, director of Civil Preparedness in Danbury.
Estefan and James Johnson, Danbury's fire marshal, said people who have power outages caused by Hurricane Irene Sunday may resort to portable generators. For a flyer on generator safety, visit this website, look at news, and for the 8/25/11 date, click on portable generator safety.
"Don't put the generator in a garage," Estefan said. "Leave it outside."
The generators burn fuel to create electricity, and that leads to two hazards in a garage. Carbon monoxide is given off by burning the fuel, and the generator has a fuel tank, which is a fire hazard.
Don't plug the generator into an outlet, Estefan said, because that can cause electrocution. Plug in the refrigerator with a heavy-duty outdoor extension cord. One cord, direct from the generator to the refrigerator, is what you need, Estefan said.
